Itoro Bassey releases documentary "Reflections on Returning" alongside debut novel Faith

Writer: WAJWAJ

Itoro Bassey, a first-generation Nigerian-American woman born and raised in the U.S. who currently resettles in Nigeria, has just released her debut novel Faith alongside her documentary "Reflections on Returning". The novel Faith was inspired "by the absence of women not telling their stories" according to Nigerian author Itoro Bassey, Faith is a coming-of-age tale about Arit Essien, a first-generation Nigerian-American woman born and raised in the U.S. who resettles in Nigeria. The novel is a meditation where four generations of women riff off ideas of faith, expectation, identity, and independence. It's a poignant conversation between the dead and the living, the past and the present, and a young woman grappling to find her place in it all.

The film is a short documentary about Nigerians who have lived abroad and are returning back to their home country. Two friends discuss over coffee the many emotions and thoughts that arise when such an important decision must be made.
