Twitter Marketing: How to be a Tweeting Wiz for Beginners

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

Twitter Marketing Tips for Beginners

The word might make you think of birds chirping happily away or farmers tweeting about their day on the farm. But, for businesses, Twitter is one of the most useful tools in the social media marketing toolbox. Why? Because it allows you to connect with potential and current customers in a way that is informal, interactive, and fun!

With over 330 million monthly active users, Twitter is a powerful platform that can help business owners achieve their marketing goals. But before we get into how to use Twitter for marketing, let’s answer the question: what is Twitter?

What is Twitter?

Think of Twitter as a global water cooler where people from all over the world come to chat about their interests, have some laughs, and exchange ideas. According to Hootsuite, 62% of people use Twitter to get their news—which means that if you want to reach a wide audience with your message, Twitter is the place to do it.

Twitter users are active: over 500 million tweets are sent per day! That’s a lot of opportunity for businesses to get their message out there and start building relationships with potential and current customers.

How Can I Use Twitter for Marketing?

Now that we’ve answered the question “what is Twitter?,” it’s time to take a look at how businesses can use this powerful platform for marketing. Here are four tips:

1. Listen to What People are Saying

Before you start tweeting away, take some time to see what people are saying about your industry, your competitors, and your product or service. You can do this by setting up Google Alerts or using a social listening tool like Hootsuite Insights or BuzzSumo. This will give you an idea of the conversations that are already happening so that you can join in on them.

2. Find Your Voice

Twitter Marketing Tips for beginners

Your tweets should reflect your brand personality—after all, people buy from businesses they know, like, and trust. So ask yourself: how do I want my business to be perceived? Once you have a good understanding of your brand voice, make sure all your tweets reflect that personality. This will make it easier for people to connect with your business on a personal level—and we all know that people buy from businesses they feel a connection with!

3. Engage with Other Users

Twitter isn’t a one-way street—it’s all about engaging with other users. When you see someone tweeting about something related to your industry, send them a quick reply! Thank them for their positive feedback, answer their questions, and address any negative comments in a professional manner. If you make an effort to engage with other users on Twitter, they will be more likely to engage with your business too.

4. Use Hashtags… But Don’t Overdo It!

Hashtags are used on Twitter (and other social media platforms) to categorize content so that people can easily find tweets about topics they’re interested in. When used sparingly and appropriately, hashtags can be very effective at helping you reach a wider audience with your tweets—just don’t go overboard! A good rule of thumb is to use 1-2 hashtags per tweet; anything more than that tends to look spammy and could turn potential customers off from engaging with your business.

5. Create Threads and Provide Value!

Twitter threads are extremely popular right now to not only increase your subscriber/follower count but to help individuals with things they may not necessarily have the skillset for naturally. If you happen to be great at something, give tips, share what tools and platforms are helping you. This will help engage the community as well as boost your credibility in your niche!

6. Share Visual Content

Tweets with images or videos tend to perform better than those without, so make sure to include visual content whenever possible. If you're sharing an article, include an image from the article along with a short description. Or, if you're hosting an event, share a flyer or promotional video.

7. Run Promotions

People love free stuff, so consider running a promotion through Twitter. For example, you could offer a discount code for people who retweet one of your tweets or enter a contest by following your account and tweeting about the prize they hope to win. Just make sure your promotion is compliant with Twitter's rules and regulations.

Twitter network and engagement

Twitter provides businesses with an opportunity to reach a large audience quickly and easily—but only if it’s used correctly. By following the tips above, you can start using Twitter effectively for marketing purposes and seeing results in no time! And who knows; you might even have some fun along the way.
