Jessica Smith: Teaching With Style, Leading With Love

Photographer: Nemy Thomas

When Jessica Smith walks into a room, the first thing you notice might be her outfit. Not because it’s flashy, but because it feels intentional; a conversation starter, an invitation. For Jessica, fashion has always been about more than clothes; it’s about connection, community, and love.

Raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, by two educators, Jessica grew up in a home built on service and devotion. Her mother and father modeled the idea that giving your best, even your last to others, is not just a duty but a way of life. “I’ve seen my mom give her last in the classroom,” Jessica recalls. “I’ve seen my dad give his last to everybody. And I think that poured into me as well.”

That foundation shaped both of Jessica’s callings: education and fashion. By day, she serves as a vice principal, guiding kindergarten through fourth graders with empathy and resolve. By night, she nurtures her passion project: Agape Unconditional, a fashion brand she founded in college.

“Kids have a bravery that adults sometimes lose… watching that bravery always reminds me to be courageous too.”

The name itself was inspired by a family conversation. Jessica’s father explained agape as the highest form of love: unconditional, the kind of love that sees flaws and chooses to embrace anyway. That idea stuck with her. “I kept dreaming about the word,” she says. “I thought, how do I use fashion as a conversation starter about this lifestyle; unconditional love?”

What began with logo sketches and a few hats has blossomed into a growing movement. The Agape Unconditional emblem — an anatomical heart, half healthy and half inflamed, with an eye at its center which represents the brand’s mission: to keep watch over the community and love through both health and hardship. For Jessica, fashion is a tool to spark dialogue, build relationships, and inspire collective growth.

Her journey hasn’t only been about entrepreneurship. Jessica’s years as an eighth-grade teacher, and now as an administrator, continue to shape her philosophy. Working with students has shown her the importance of listening with intention and the power of courage.

At the heart of it all, whether she’s guiding a classroom, mentoring young entrepreneurs, or designing her next piece; Jessica remains committed to her guiding principle: we before me. She believes deeply that thriving communities are built on empathy, unity, and unconditional love.

“It’s always a ‘we before me.’ We are stronger together.”

With Agape Unconditional approaching its fourth anniversary, Jessica continues to build something larger than fashion. She is building a reminder stitched into every piece: love, when unconditional, has the power to transform both individuals and entire communities.
